Taylor Vinters was highly commended at the FT Innovative Lawyers Awards Europe 2016, beating stiff competition from other Legal 500 law firms.

The international law firm joined more than 400 representatives from across the legal services sector at the awards ceremony on 5th October, which was held at the Natural History Museum in London.

It achieved the commendation in the Innovation in technology and data analytics category for acting as an incubator, investing in and supporting the development of legal technologies such as ThoughtRiver, which analyses contracts.

Matt Meyer, CEO of Taylor Vinters said: “It is always satisfying to take part in the FT Innovative Lawyer Awards. Aside from a chance to shout about some of our projects at the sharp end of legal services, it’s an opportunity to hear about the cutting edge in what is a dynamic and exciting sector.

Our incubation model for ThoughtRiver is novel in the legal services market and we believe that this willingness to collaborate and challenge our own business model is essential to keep pace. Whatever business commentators want to say about legal services, the industry is experiencing a sea change in attitude and activity that I have no doubt will deliver better outcomes for clients, rewarding careers for young lawyers and ensure that we continue to build valuable legal services businesses with strong futures.

“As business leaders we can build the right environment for innovation but it still depends on individuals having the ideas and the drive to deliver improvement and change. I commend all the winners for that and I’m very proud of my team for embracing innovation at Taylor Vinters.

Now in its 11th year, FT Innovative Lawyers Europe 2016 is a rankings report and awards for European-based lawyers which is widely regarded as the best researched in the market. Shortlists for the awards comprise the top ranked submissions in each section of the report, which are independently researched through telephone interviews and analysis including client, independent, and expert references.

With bases in Cambridge, London and Singapore, ThoughtRiver has developed software which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to scan and interpret information from all written contracts used in commercial risk assessments and presents it in a central online dashboard that enables clients to assess risk more easily. It was founded by Tim Pullan who was a partner at Taylor Vinters in Asia while the AI software was being incubated and developed.
