Today marks International Women’s Day 2026. At ThoughtRiver, we're taking a moment to reflect on how AI impacts gender balance in the workplace in more ways than one.

The legal industry is known for moving methodically and thoughtfully. But legal tech? That is a different story. It’s at the forefront of change and accelerating at the pace of AI evolution – bringing an entire industry along for the ride at an unprecedented speed. In Legal tech, women are building, leading, and reshaping what is possible not only with technology, but for the future of the profession.

Now more than ever, as AI permeates every aspect of work and life, it’s essential to build AI that works for everyone – which requires teams, data, inputs, and guardrails that reflect everyone.  At ThoughtRiver, we are immensely proud of our 50-50 gender balanced teams, including the C-suite.

Across engineering, product, commercial, operations, and leadership, women are central to everything we build and everything we deliver.  This balance isn't a testament to good intentions. It's the result of focusing on the best talent, ideas, and potential, while creating a work environment where people can show up as themselves and integrate meaningful work into their lives.

The Gender Balance Advantage

When we debate product decisions or prioritize features, the diversity of perspective in the room gives us an edge. Different backgrounds surface different questions. Different questions lead to better products. A female engineer might flag usability issues that mirror challenges faced by in-house counsel working across time zones. Someone who's negotiated contracts in a corporate environment thinks differently about risk than someone who trained at a law firm. These aren't generic benefits, they're specific advantages when building tools that need to work across varied legal contexts and organizational structures.

Research shows that gender-balanced teams demonstrate stronger problem-solving capabilities and superior decision making.

At ThoughtRiver, we’re building AI to review nuanced contract language and complex commercial transactions. Cognitive diversity is essential. Our platform is not just reviewing contracts, we’re teaching machines to understand context, risk, and implication. This requires human intelligence from multiple vantage points. The algorithms we create, the training data we select, the negotiation strategies prioritized and implemented in different situations: these all reflect human choices. If those choices come from homogeneous teams, we'll encode those limitations into the technology itself.

AI and Levelling the Playing Field

Women have historically been underrepresented in senior legal roles, even more so in tech leadership, and almost invisibly rare at the intersection of the two.

Here's what makes this moment genuinely interesting: as AI increasingly handles routine legal work, we have an opportunity to reshape what the future of legal work looks like. We can build tools that surface insights rather than reward face time. We can create systems that value analytical rigor, emotional intelligence, and collaboration over traditional hierarchies.

But only if we're intentional about it.

AI doesn't automatically level any playing field. It reflects the priorities and blind spots of whoever builds it. A contract risk assessment tool could just as easily reinforce existing biases - flagging aggressive negotiation language as "problematic" when it might simply reflect different cultural communication styles, or prioritizing provisions that matter most to certain industries while overlooking concerns relevant to others.

Legal tech is one of the most exciting fields right now - a space where AI is fundamentally transforming how contracts are read, risks are identified, and decisions are made. The people shaping that transformation matter. Their perspectives, experiences, and ways of thinking aren't incidental to the product. They're embedded in it.

That is why building a truly balanced team is not just a values statement for us. It is a strategic commitment.

We are proud of where we are. And we know there is always more to do.

What This Actually Looks Like

This year's International Women's Day theme; Give to Gain, resonates with how we think about this work. The most innovative companies understand that inclusion isn't a cost or a concession. When you genuinely invest in women, in their development, their leadership, their voices, everyone gains. Better decisions, stronger culture, smarter products.

Looking Forward

We’re proud of where we are, and there’s always more to do.

The advancement of AI in legal work isn't something that happens to us, it's something we're actively creating. Every product decision shapes how thousands of legal professionals will work in the years ahead. That's both a responsibility and an opportunity.
